Surgery

Lovan Care Surgery

Making the decision to put your pet under anesthesia can be concerning however; Dr. Bumgardner provides excellent surgical care protocols to help make the process smoother. If your pet needs surgery, we will customize care for them starting by scheduling a complementary pre-surgical consultation.

At that time you and your pet can meet the Doctor, go over a surgical plan with costs, and discuss any concerns you may have, after which we can schedule the surgical procedure for your pet.

Call to schedule a complimentary pre-surgical or dental consultation

Some of the anesthetic procedures we perform are: spays and neuters, bladder stone surgeries, exploratory surgery, foreign body removal, laceration repair, cherry eye surgery, soft tissue surgery, and dental cleanings.

The day of the procedure, we will:

  1. 1Take a blood sample from your pet and run a blood panel and CBC to ensure that all of their internal systems are functioning well. If anything is abnormal on the blood panel, we will NOT do the anesthetic procedure for the safety of your pet.
  2. 2Place a catheter in their arm and administer intravenous fluids before, during, and after anesthesia. This is done to support blood pressure, rehydrate your pet, and also allows us to administer medications.
  3. 3Give your pet medications to support their blood pressure and heart rate, as well as a mild sedative/pain reliever.
  4. 4Start anesthesia with a human-grade anesthetic medicine, and then place an endotracheal tube to support breathing and administer anesthetic gas and oxygen.
  5. 5A veterinary technician will monitor your pet's oxygen saturation levels, blood pressure, ECG, pulse, respiration rate, and capillary refill time while the doctor performs your pet's procedure.
  6. 6Surgical/Medical cleanliness and care will be maintained at all times during the procedure.
  7. 7Pain medication will be given before your pet wakes up from anesthesia to minimize discomfort.
  8. 8A technician and the doctor will continue to monitor your pet as they come out of anesthesia.
  9. 9A technician or doctor will call you when your pet wakes up to let you know how everything went, and to schedule a discharge appointment time for later that day.
  10. 10At the discharge appointment, the doctor or technician will go over medications, at-home instructions, answer any questions, and schedule any follow-up visits. You are free to call us at any time if you have any questions.

Even if you don’t choose us for your pet’s surgery or anesthetic procedure, we highly recommend the above protocol for maximum safety of your pet. If you are calling around at different veterinary Clinics for this type of service, please ask if your pet will receive a similar protocol. We want what is best for your pet!!!

Dental Care and Cleaning

Of all the preventative health measures you can take, perhaps nothing is more important than maintaining your pet's dental health. Tartar and gum disease produces more than just "bad breath", it can also lead to disease of the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys. Over time, plaque hardens into calculus (covering the teeth in billions of bacteria) which can cause loose teeth, bad breath, gum inflammation, resorptive lesions, gum recession, and systemic disease (which hurts the heart, liver, and kidneys). With recent advances in veterinary medicine, it has become increasingly obvious that good dental care is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to add years and quality to your pet's life.
We recommend routine dental home care started at a young age to prevent your dog or cat from getting periodontal disease. The best thing you can do for your dog or cat’s teeth is brush them with a pet toothpaste (NO fluoride) at least three times a week. Don’t think your dog or cat will let you brush their teeth? We also have a dental water additive, dental treats, Purina Dental Health food, pet oral rinse, and vegetable or beef dental rawhides.
If your dog or cat already has calculus buildup, he or she may need a dental cleaning. Dr. Wigington evaluates all patients every 6 months to determine if he or she is a candidate for a Dental Prophylaxis (dental cleaning).
While the equipment we use to perform the actual cleaning and polishing is the same type of equipment your dentist uses, there are often several additional steps involved in the practice of veterinary dentistry. The biggest difference between human and veterinary dentistry is our routine use of General Anesthesia. Since a pet will not "open wide", the only way to do a thorough dental prophylaxis is to use anesthesia.

STEPS IN PROPHYAXIS
Dental & Radiograph Machine
  1. 1SCALING the tartar from above and below the gum line, using both hand instruments and ultrasonic scaling equipment.
  2. 2POLISHING "smoothes down" the surfaces, making them more resistant to plaque formation.
  3. 3DIGITAL DENTAL RADIOGRAPHS show us the structure and positioning of teeth, as well as any problems that would warrant a tooth to be extracted.
  4. 4FLUORIDE TREATMENT strengthens the enamel and decreases the rate of plaque buildup.
  5. 5CHARTING the teeth allows the doctor to have a permanent record so she can monitor problem areas and note any extractions.
  6. 6ANTIBIOTICS are required in veterinary dentistry since dental care is usually not requested or suggested until tooth and gum disease is already present.
