February is Dental Health Month:

  • Remember that pets have teeth too!!!  Dogs and cats build up plaque, tartar and bacteria on their teeth just as we do.
  • Plaque is a mixture of bacteria, minerals from saliva and gummy food particles.  It is soft at first but over time, it hardens and turns brown.
  • The hardening material is called tartar.  As more forms, it gets under the gum line carrying infection through the blood stream.  In time, the teeth may loosen and become painful.
  • 85% of dogs over one year of age have some degree of periodontal disease and only 3% get treated!
  • Regular brushing is the best way to prevent periodontal disease, and should be done at least twice a week.
  • Other good items to try are:  CET Chews (helps stop plaque formation), CET Aquadent (a water additive that controls plaque and tartar formation and helps prevent tooth decay.  Also helps to refresh breath), Greenies (chew that helps reduce plaque and tartar) and dry dog food that helps promote dental health.
